Your essays won’t write themselves (but this can help)

Hi, Reader!

I had a great week last week in Columbus attending the National Association for College Admissions Counselors conference and connecting with some of my College Essay Guy colleagues. September is a tough time to have a college counseling conference — when we’ve got lots of students preparing for their first round of submissions — but I’m fortunate to have been able to serve my students, spend time with colleagues, and make some great memories.

But balancing making those connections with getting important work done that families were relying on me for wasn’t easy. It took a lot of organization, efficiency, and late nights, but I did it.

Students might be facing that same kind of struggle now as they balance completing their college applications with extracurriculars, work, school, and a little well-deserved bed rotting.

I know that many students are used to going straight from rough draft to final draft with their school papers, and some shoot for that 650-word target from the onset and don’t want to write one more word than they have to. But these admissions essays are a little different. I’ve found it’s the iterations in the middle drafts that yield writing gold for their personal statements. It’s the word vomiting, so to speak, in the early drafts that generate the cool content and one-of-a-kind ideas … if you ask me.

If you’ve got a student who’s still dragging their feet on getting started with their essays (or you are one of these students) — whether you’re struggling to find the time to write or just don’t even know what to write about — I’ve got two great resources for you:

  • College Essay Guy's "How to Write an Outstanding Personal Statement" Course. It’s not too late to register for this low-priced course that starts TONIGHT, and I think it’s worth it. This is a live and on-demand step-by-step course on writing an outstanding college personal statement. 15/10 would recommend. Live sessions run Sept. 24 & Oct. 1, 8, & 15. If you’re not able to attend live, you’ll also be able to watch on demand. (Bonus, get 10% off using code JULIA10.)
  • My “Nailing Your Personal Statement Topic in 60 Minutes” workbook is the same one I brought to three local high schools last month to get them started on their brainstorming. “The seniors were buzzing with excitement at the end of their day,” one school’s principal told me. “You got their creative minds going.” Who doesn’t love that? (Oh, and there's an upgrade to get Loom feedback from me on what potential essay topics I see coming through!)

And let me remind you: You’ll never have more time to work on your essays than you do right now, so why not get started (or at least solidify your plan for getting started right now)?

Send me a quick reply and let me know what you’re going to take action on today.

Happy Writing!

Julia

What I'm Recommending

Start filling out the STARS (self-reported academic record system), formerly known as the SRAR/SSAR, if any of the schools you’re applying to require it. You can read more about it here (though I need to update the name in my blog).

What I'm Reading

Brene Brown’s “Strong Ground,” which I got a copy of at my conference (she was the opening speaker). While I didn’t have the chance to hear her speak, I’m excited to dig into this. I don’t know much about her, I’ll admit, so I’m curious to learn more.

Hi, Reader! Some of you may be getting ready to submit applications soon — remember that you have until 11:59 p.m. local time on the deadline day to submit them. (But don’t wait until the last minute! The Common App becomes notoriously glitchy as we get closer to midnight.) I know I’ve shared them before, but in case you need any last-minute help with your Common App application, here are two resources I find helpful: AXS Companion — Open Resource. Hi, Reader! All of you are likely well into the thick of the school year now — and from what I hear, teachers didn’t waste any time assigning projects and scheduling tests. I hope y’all are adjusting to the new schedule well. It’s back-to-school time in our house, too. My son started his junior year of college, and it’s always been tradition in our house that I have hot, fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookies waiting for the kids when they get home from school. My son and I have been in a...
