Hi, Reader! I’ve had a great few weeks lately! A few weeks ago, I spent nearly a week with some of my College Essay Guy colleagues and other college counseling professionals at a retreat in El Cajon, Calif., where we talked all things authentic relating and storytelling. We even had the chance to write our own personal statements, and if you’re curious, you can check out mine here. I got back and then quickly made the switch from writer to coach and went up to College Station last Tuesday and Wednesday to present for the fourth year to Texas A&M’s Youth Adventure Program camp. There, I worked with 22 rising seniors on their Texas A&M admission essays while they were immersed in all things Aggie. It was so much fun to work with them and see them go from stressed out to breathing a little easier. Then to cap it all off, we just got back last night from a trip to Seattle, where we enjoyed cooler weather, took a break from the routine, and caught (and released) some really weird sea creatures in the Puget Sound. How to Make the Most of (the Rest of) Your SummerBut now, I’m back to the grind (at least for the next two weeks). How about you? I’m finding it hard to believe it’s already mid-July, but here we are. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of time to get some work done on college prep! Whatever grade you’re in, there’s a little something you can do. Check out this list and see if there’s anything you can cross off before summer ends! 9th-graders

Hi, Reader! Some of you may be getting ready to submit applications soon — remember that you have until 11:59 p.m. local time on the deadline day to submit them. (But don’t wait until the last minute! The Common App becomes notoriously glitchy as we get closer to midnight.) I know I’ve shared them before, but in case you need any last-minute help with your Common App application, here are two resources I find helpful: AXS Companion — Open Resource. Anyone can use or share this free resource....
Hi, Reader! I had a great week last week in Columbus attending the National Association for College Admissions Counselors conference and connecting with some of my College Essay Guy colleagues. September is a tough time to have a college counseling conference — when we’ve got lots of students preparing for their first round of submissions — but I’m fortunate to have been able to serve my students, spend time with colleagues, and make some great memories. Me and some of the CEG team at a...
Hi, Reader! All of you are likely well into the thick of the school year now — and from what I hear, teachers didn’t waste any time assigning projects and scheduling tests. I hope y’all are adjusting to the new schedule well. It’s back-to-school time in our house, too. My son started his junior year of college, and it’s always been tradition in our house that I have hot, fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookies waiting for the kids when they get home from school. My son and I have been in a...
