Hi, Reader! Ah, the "magic number" question! If only there were just one right answer (or number). Here's my guideline: quality over quantity, always. I typically recommend 8-10 thoughtfully selected schools for most students, but there are students who apply to only 3-4 schools … and some who apply to more than 20. Now, back in the day, I applied to just two schools: Illinois Wesleyan University and DePauw University. (And no, I have no idea what I wrote my essay on, but I sure wish I had a copy of it!) But although things are a little different today, what still matters more than the number is the balance. Think of your college list like a well-planned investment portfolio — you need some safer options (where admission is likely), some target schools (solid chances), and some reach schools (dream options but less certain). And those school lists (and your chances) might shift a little bit each year, depending on your academic profile and the school’s institutional priorities (what they’re looking for in a student) and what they’re requiring of you in your application (e.g., test scores). The goal isn't to apply to every possible college, but to create a manageable list that genuinely excites you. Remember: Each additional application means more essays (potentially), more fees, and more time spent — resources that might be better invested in making fewer applications truly outstanding. And here's a little secret: students who apply to too many schools often end up with decision paralysis when those acceptances roll in! Next week, I’ll talk more about how to create that balanced list, but if you’re itching to get started on your list (or refine one you already have), check out these links from my College Connect Resource Guide:
