Don’t leave free money on the table like I did!

Hi, Reader!

Did you know students of all ages can apply for scholarships — right now? And why not apply for them? It’ll put those essays and letters of recommendation you’re already writing and getting to good use.

Here’s a list of just a few of my go-to sites for these scholarships (hint: I’ve got even more on my website).

You’d be surprised at how much scholarship money is out there … and how much is left unclaimed. Do a little digging, and you’ll be amazed at what you find. (Embarrassed mom confession: I had no idea our NHS chapter offered scholarships, until Senior Night. They announced at the ceremony that they had so few people apply for it, they gave the scholarship to everyone who’d applied. Whoops. Missed opportunity.)

And if you want some amazing tips on winning those scholarships, I highly recommend Monica Matthews’ How to Win College Scholarships. (And you can get 25% off her ebook with the code SCHOLARSHIP SECRETS.)

What I'm Working on

I’m adding new examples to my UT Austin and Texas A&M Application Resource Guides to make sure they’re in tip-top shape for this year.

What I've Learned

Reach out to admissions if you ever have a question. I recently reached out to UT admissions to ask a question about how their optional Events and Circumstances question compared to the Common App’s Additional Information section. Their answer? “Students are able to inform us of any situation they see fit for this optional short answer. We do not review the Common App prompts, only the UT Austin specific ones.” You don’t know until you ask!

What I'm Watching

The Common App got a refresh this year, so I’m making sure I know where everything is. This 41-minute video from the College Essay Guy walks you through everything you need to know about filling out the Common App in 2025.

And the third and fourth ones can feel especially true for our new seniors, who are balancing the stress of college applications with the fun (and intensity) of...
