Big feelings (mine) and what rising seniors should be doing right now.

Hi, Reader!

Last week, I helped my daughter move into her first post-college apartment.

There were lots of feelings. Pride, mostly (both of us). Some tears (happy and sad). Several trips up and down an elevator with boxes and suitcases that weighed more than anyone expected.

She was so excited, and rightfully so. Watching her step into her next chapter made me think about all the rising seniors right now, standing at the edge of their own adventure that's not too far off.

Often, I hear the college application process get talked about like it's something to survive. But for a lot of students, it’s also something to get genuinely excited about. New cities, new people, new opportunities, new versions of themselves.

That excitement is real. And I want you to embrace it. So this summer is when you start building toward it. And I want to help take some of the stress out of the process!

Common App Updates!

Good news: the Common App isn’t throwing us any curveballs for 2026-27.

The updates are modest this year (compared to last year’s overhaul), which means students can get started now without waiting to see what changes will be made. Create an account if you haven’t. Explore the system. The earlier students are in there, the less overwhelming it feels come August. (Here’s what you can get started on now vs. what you should hold off on filling in until after the refresh on Aug. 1.)

I walked through everything that’s new (and what stayed the same) over on my blog (linked below).

One thing to watch separately: individual school prompts. Some schools are eliminating supplemental essays entirely this cycle. Others are adding Early Action or Early Decision pathways. Neither of these shows up in the Common App announcement — you have to check each school on your list.

Happy Writing!

Julia

💻 What I'm Working on

I’m all in on my Texas A&M workshop right now — I’m taking it on the Aggie campus at the end of June. It’s been a fun build. The plan is to bring you a digital version in the not-too-distant future, so stay tuned.

Pssst. I just talked with A&M admissions today, and they let me know that the supplemental essay prompts are staying the same this year.

✅ What I'm Recommending

Two things this week!

Registration for the College Essay Guy Summer Application Program is open (it starts at the end of the month), and you can get 10% off with my code JULIA10 at checkout. Forward me your confirmation email after you register, and I’ll send you free access to my “ResuMEH to ResumYAY” online course and companion PDF guide.

Also: my friend Sofia just published her book, “The College Application Personal Essay: Your Roadmap To Find A Topic, Stop Overthinking, And Write With Confidence.” We had coffee last week, and I got to tell her in person how proud I am of her. I’m grateful to call her a colleague and a friend.

📺 What You Should Sign Up for

The CEG Personal Statement Boot Camp on June 16 is free for rising juniors — 90 minutes with Ethan Sawyer to help students find their essay topic and start writing. A recording goes to everyone who registers.

Hi, Reader! If you have (or you are) a rising senior with Texas A&M on their list, this one’s for you. I just released a brand-new guide: Cracking the Texas A&M Supplemental Essays — a self-paced guide with video coaching that walks students through every required supplemental essay prompt, step by step. (And will be updated to reflect the new scholarship essay prompts when they're confirmed.) One thing I see constantly: Students pour everything into the longer personal statement and then...

Hi, Reader! Quick story. Every summer for the past five years, I’ve gone to Texas A&M to run essay workshops for aspiring Aggies. When I head up there on Tuesday for this year's workshop, things will be different: A&M just added four new required essay prompts, which means more students than ever will be writing essays they’ve never seen before, without much guidance on what A&M is actually looking for. Here's me a few years ago on campus. Students often show up with ideas already — which is...

Hi, Reader! Here's something I see a lot, especially as deadlines draw closer: a student finishes a draft and shares it with everyone they trust. Mom, dad, older sibling at Duke, favorite English teacher, piano teacher, the family friend who went to a good school 30 years ago. But here's the problem: Two weeks later, the student has six sets of notes, a lot of confusing feedback, and an essay that sounds like nobody. (Check out this video from the College Essay Guy on the risks of getting too...
