Hi, Reader! If you have (or you are) a rising senior with Texas A&M on their list, this one’s for you. I just released a brand-new guide: Cracking the Texas A&M Supplemental Essays — a self-paced guide with video coaching that walks students through every required supplemental essay prompt, step by step. (And will be updated to reflect the new scholarship essay prompts when they're confirmed.) One thing I see constantly: Students pour everything into the longer personal statement and then rush through the shorter supplements as if they’re a formality. They’re not. A&M is asking these questions for a reason, and admissions officers read them carefully. That’s true even if you’re an auto-admit. And that's the part that surprises a lot of families: auto-admit status guarantees you a place at A&M, but not necessarily a place in your chosen major. The supplementals can be where you give yourself an advantage. And with A&M introducing four new required essay prompts this year, I know students want every advantage they can get. This guide fixes that. No generic advice like “be yourself and write from the heart.” Instead: the actual prompts, what A&M is looking for, common mistakes applicants make, and a brainstorming process to help students find the right story — fast. Here’s What’s Inside For each of these required essays, I provide brainstorming frameworks, real essay examples, coaching notes, and videos from me walking through each prompt on camera:
For the optional 250-word Additional Experiences/Opportunities response, I offer written and video guidance on whether to write it and how best to use that space.
A Note on Scholarship Prompts The four new required prompts were previously scholarship essay prompts, so A&M will likely update the scholarship prompts this cycle. The moment they’re released, I’ll update this guide — and if you’ve already purchased, you’ll get the update automatically at no extra charge. About the Personal Statement While I don’t cover the main personal statement in detail here — that essay goes to most of your schools and isn’t unique to A&M — I do share some tips on getting started, my favorite resources for getting it done, and some essays that have worked well. A&M applications open Aug. 1 and are due Dec. 1. Senior year will be busy. Summer is the last real stretch of uninterrupted writing time you have. Early bird pricing is $37 (and includes a free bonus) through June 30. After that, it goes to its everyday price of $67.
Julia P.S. The first sentence is always the hardest. That’s why the bonus is a mini-guide on exactly how to nail it — included free through July 5. P.P.S. Hi, Reader! Quick story. Every summer for the past five years, I’ve gone to Texas A&M to run essay workshops for aspiring Aggies. When I head up there on Tuesday for this year's workshop, things will be different: A&M just added four new required essay prompts, which means more students than ever will be writing essays they’ve never seen before, without much guidance on what A&M is actually looking for. Here's me a few years ago on campus. Students often show up with ideas already — which is...
Hi, Reader! Here's something I see a lot, especially as deadlines draw closer: a student finishes a draft and shares it with everyone they trust. Mom, dad, older sibling at Duke, favorite English teacher, piano teacher, the family friend who went to a good school 30 years ago. But here's the problem: Two weeks later, the student has six sets of notes, a lot of confusing feedback, and an essay that sounds like nobody. (Check out this video from the College Essay Guy on the risks of getting too...
Hi, Reader! For the past five summers, I’ve run live essay workshops on the Texas A&M campus for aspiring Aggies — all focused on the written pieces of the application (including supplemental essays) A&M requires. A few years ago, but this is me every year on campus! This year, the stakes are a little higher. A&M just added four new required essay prompts to their application. That means more to write and more chances to get it right — if you're ready. Here’s something I’ve noticed over my...
