Last-Minute College Apps? ⏰No Worries!

Hi, Reader!

I’m getting ready to head out this weekend for San Diego, where I’ll spend the week with the College Essay Guy team to plan for the next admission season. I love the team I work with and am grateful to be able to spend the week with them learning, connecting, and planning. They make me a better essay coach — and person.

All that prep to be gone for a week is why this week’s email is running a little late. Can you empathize?

It seems like often, waiting until the last minute is second nature for many of us. And it may be a little panic-inducing … especially if you’re still thinking about submitting some college applications in the next few days.

But here’s the good news for the Class of 2025: Even if you’ve procrastinated (or are submitting some new applications after getting some deferrals or denials), you can still submit some kick-butt essays. Now, it’s not like I recommend this at-the-buzzer approach (take note Class of 2026), but I get it. Life happens.

So how do you take care of your application essays fast?

Check out this blog post from the College Essay Guy: How to Write Your College Essay in Just One Night. Have a little more time (but not much) before your deadline? Then invest 9 minutes in this YouTube video: Finish Your College Application in 2 Weeks (Even if You Haven’t Started Yet).

Both will help you submit your best applications in the time you have left.

And if you’re part of the Class of 2026, you still have a few months before you have to start thinking about college essays, but your application time will be here before you know it. While you don’t need to start writing until after school lets out for the summer, if you think you might want/need application or essay support, start researching your options and interviewing professionals soon. Finding the right fit is so important, and it’s really helpful to talk with different coaches and counselors to see who works best with your personality and goals. I know that coaches are booking up now (and I’m taking on only a limited number of students this season), so don't wait too long!

Meanwhile, I’m off to pack. For real this time!

Happy Writing!

Julia

What I'm Working on

I’m updating old blog posts and adding new ones, like this one on the Common Data Set. Have you used the CDS in your college research?

What I'm Recommending

I love this travel backpack I got from Amazon. It’s perfect for my laptop, but it also fits a ton of clothes and travel essentials.

What I'm Reading

We are 2 episodes into the second season of “Night Agent.” I’m loving it, but I need a refresh on what happened last season, because it was just too long ago!

Hi, Reader! It was my dog’s second birthday yesterday. OK, we just made yesterday her birthday. She was turned into the shelter as a stray, so she really doesn’t have an official birthday. But we knew her general age, and sometimes she acts a fool, so April 1 seemed as good of a day as any to name it her birthday. Lucy and her dog-friendly cake! But as you can imagine, that’s not why I’m writing. Instead, I want to ease your mind about something. I’ve been spending a lot of time talking with...

Hi, Reader! One of the biggest mistakes students sometimes make in the college application process is having an unbalanced college list — either too many reach schools, not enough financial safeties, or schools that aren’t actually a great fit. (It doesn’t help that schools are always changing what they’re looking for in a student, what they’re asking of students, and how many students they’re looking to accept.) Here are some strategies for building a well-rounded list that increases both...

Hi, Reader! I know it’s not even spring break for most, but you best believe I’m already thinking ahead to summer. It’ll be here before you know it … do you know how you’re going to spend it? Colleges love to see students making the most of their summers — gaining knowledge, getting experience in fields they’re interested in, and serving their communities — but that doesn’t mean you need to spend thousands on a fancy program. Here are some smart (and sometimes free) ways to use your summer...
